Labmatrix™ Biospecimen Management

The increase in clinical specimen utility for disease research is driving biobanking initiatives worldwide. Biospecimen collections are diverse in type, quality, quantity, data annotation and storage sites. These include both formal repositories maintained by government agency facilities, academic or medical center research labs, commercial and non-profit enterprises, as well as informal specimen banks procured by individual researchers.

The complexity of sample acquisition, processing, annotation, QA/QC, distribution and usage has instigated a national dialogue of best practices regarding biobanking, which resulted in the recent release of guidelines for biospecimen resources by the National Cancer Institute. Specific recommendations for biospecimen data management and inventory control tracking were described which provide an overview of features and functionality for biorepository information systems, which are all available in Labmatrix.
