Labmatrix™ Biospecimen Management
The increase in clinical specimen utility for disease research is driving biobanking initiatives worldwide. Biospecimen collections are diverse in type, quality, quantity, data annotation and storage sites. These include both formal repositories maintained by government agency facilities, academic or medical center research labs, commercial and non-profit enterprises, as well as informal specimen banks procured by individual researchers.
The complexity of sample acquisition, processing, annotation, QA/QC, distribution and usage has instigated a national dialogue of best practices regarding biobanking, which resulted in the recent release of guidelines for biospecimen resources by the National Cancer Institute. Specific recommendations for biospecimen data management and inventory control tracking were described which provide an overview of features and functionality for biorepository information systems, which are all available in Labmatrix.
Labmatrix is a robust, scalable application, flexible enough to meet changing scientific needs, maintains data exchange standards and can be interfaced with clinical and other information systems while conforming to HIPAA regulations. Labmatrix incorporates functionality to track and annotate a biospecimen from collection through processing, barcoding, storage, and distribution while maintaining associated clinical and donor-related data. Clincal data collection for longitudinal studies is supported and facilitates compliance with privacy regulations. Unlike other sample inventory management systems, Labmatrix enables electronic capture of downstream molecular assay data resulting from biospecimen analyses, regardless of the technology or data source. Query tools enable comprehensive data retrieval, supporting cross-referential discovery and export to other applications. Labmatrix functionality meets NCI guidelines, including a full audit trail and other security features such as user authentication, record lock, system timeout, and configurable, fine-grained access control.
